How can Visuals Help?

Why Use Visuals?

Sometimes, seeing something can make it much easier to understand than simply hearing it.

Visual supports can give children a clear and consistent way to understand what is happening, what is expected and what choices are available to them. Unlike spoken words, which disappear as soon as they're said, a visual stays there for the child to look at for as long as they need.

They can be particularly helpful for children who find communication, changes, routines or processing spoken information difficult.

Visuals can help with:

  • Communication – giving children another way to express their needs, wants and feelings.
  • Routines – showing what is happening now and what will happen next.
  • Choices – making options clearer and easier to understand.
  • Independence – helping children complete everyday tasks with less prompting.
  • Transitions – preparing for changes and moving from one activity to another.
  • Emotions & regulation – helping children recognise feelings and communicate when they need support.

Simple tools for everyday moments

Visual support doesn't need to be complicated. Sometimes a simple picture, symbol or prompt can make an everyday situation feel much clearer and more predictable.

That's why I create resources that are simple, practical and easy to use in real life — at home, at school, while out and about, or wherever a little extra communication support is needed.

Every child is different, and there's no single visual that works for everyone. The aim is simply to provide another tool that can help them understand, communicate and feel more confident. 💜
